We are now able to move into our own apartment which means we can now have a better home office! When we moved to this area for medical care and be close to my wife's family we had no idea that the average home was almost a million dollars, in the ghetto areas a home is still $200K plus. So we had to live in an RV camper until we could find an apartment. Which looks like will happen this week.

Medically wise I am about the same- cancer is still growing, but the pain is much better managed now so that I can do more things than before.

My main computer crashed and I am trying to recover it- which I have- but it can no longer keep a date / time and memory leaks ae constant issue now on win and linux. This causes lock ups, sound loss, freezes, and program crashes. This saddens me as I have had this computer since 2013 or 14 and it has severed me faithfully. But at least I havnt lost my data.

That's great to hear. I honestly like apartments better. Even if I could afford some fancy house, I would still rent an apartment cause it makes me feel more comfortable. Around my area in Portland (which is like the hip neighborhood) even a "cheap" house starts at $700k. And that is like for the crappiest one. Honestly, it's a big waste of money.

Yeah not to mentin the risk of housing price bubble. My house in Coos Bay Or went from 80k to 600k then the market popped and it fell to 65k. It is a myth your house will never lose money.

Yeah, but when your house value drops, your taxes always stay the same or get higher. They come out and tell you, well it's worth more so you pay these higher taxes, but they never came and told me it was worth less so I could pay less. It's a win win for the government. Your house value might not always go up, but your taxes always will.

Plus houses are haunted. Ghost usually don't bother with apartments.

This is the "hotel" I stayed at in Amsterdam when I went to GodotCon in 2020. Totally haunted.

Hmmm seems that way in books and movies huh. Pretty soon they will be able to haunt forums and websites too.

Thats a cool looking hotel. I tend to end up in hotels inspired by Soviet era architects- square, spartan, and cold. If there were ghosts they didnt bother, now in houses I have actually yelled at ghosts, watched them trash my house, break things, slam doors etc. Though this tended happen just around scenes of violence or people with a history of abuse. Which may have been poltergeists not ghosts.

But apartments tend to be more free from bedbugs than hotels. And those bother me much worse than ghosts. To the point I no longer bring any luggage in to a hotel I just grab a change of clothes from car, keep those in a sealed plastic bag. Next day shower put on new clothes and seal the old set in plastic bag. Then first chance wash old clothes in hot water and hot dryer.

People always assume ghost are mean, but they can be nice too.

Of course. Biblically speaking in the book Romans you are surrounded by those who died and were not condemned all the time. Id assume they wouldnt be mean. But supernatural stuff can be upsetting to some so I probably should not go much down this rabbit hole- but to say this. I have never been attacked by a ghost. I have been attacked by people claiming to have demons though. (running homeless shelters and children's homes you meet people at their worst and sometimes at their best) But that is a whole another rabbit hole.

Hey can you survive without a car in your area of Portland safely? I noticed that safe cities with good public transportation and walker friendly are more expensive. But Ive never sat down to see if its cheaper to live in an expensive neighborhood with out the cost of a car, insurance, gas etc, than it would be to have a car in less costly neighborhood. I have never lived where there is easy public transportation.

Yeah, well we can leave it at that. I've been through a lot. I do have a car, but I never drive it cause I don't leave my house. Most of the buildings don't have garages, though, I had to look for a while to find an apartment building with garage space. It costs extra but it's worth it to have covering (since it rains all the time) and also for safety reasons. They do have a bus line, but it's basically useless unless you are just going downtown or to a popular area. If you want to go anywhere shopping or whatever, you need a car.

That is how it is here in Lehi, UT except it rarely rains in the desert. I look forward to seeing Oregon again- the forests and coast are wonderful. I miss trees and greenery,

I don't think I'd like public transportation. I've never used it though, but all those strange people and you don't know their motives. I'd say most of time everything would be fine, but you would always be on edge that a crazy was on board. For cars, you can buy an older one and skip collision insurance, which makes them somewhat affordable. It gets old though, doing repairs and dealing with breakdowns. I've been thinking of getting a new car again. Waste of money in a way, but it would be nice.

Public transport is nice in the cities it was designed for. I grew up in New York City and they have some of the best transportation anywhere. The trains run 24/7 and in a peak time you won't wait more than like 10 minutes for the next train. You can get anywhere in the area within like 1 hour (unless really far out). Which is great because you can like go to a bar or a party, leave at 4AM in the morning totally drunk, and still get home safely. NYC is also nice because you can buy hot food on the street at 4AM in the morning as well.

cars definitely are not investments, but disposable tools and vanity expression. I have owned vehicles since 1985 and I have never seen one I own increase in value. But they do provide convenience till they dont. Good luck finding a car.

Starting a business or playing the stock market are investments. Cars, houses, and other stuff are liabilities, particularly since most people are going into serious debt to do this and don't even understand the numbers.

Some cars can be good investments, if they're high-end models or were previously owned by famous people. But those are way beyond what I can afford.

Houses tend to be good investments, since they generally increase in value. But the way the real estate market has been in recent decades, it's tricky.

Yeah I got burned on real estate in Oregon. Houses are better investments if you are buying tax lien and selling them. But here in Utah houses are currently 12 times the average income. So if you had bought 5 to ten years ago youd possibly be a millionaire now. But unfortunately people on average borrowed the equity in their homes during a massive dollar devaluation period and fear the real estate market bubble is going to burst and people will be upside down in debt.

When you figure taxes and interest on a house, I wouldn't consider them a good a investment. I prefer to have a modest house to live in, which works out the best because taxes are lower and I have freedom to hang a picture wherever I want. I have had so many friends ruin their lives buying expensive houses and then live like paupers trying to make the payments. It makes me sick. When they sell they barely make out and then jump right in again. It must be some kind of psychosis or something. IRA's or 401k's are the best investments. You can sell and resell and not pay taxes until you start drawing money out, and you can draw it out in the smallest allowed amounts and pay very little in taxes then. People don't want to do it because their retirement is far away, but it's on you before you know what happened.
