So on my first trip to Japan, I got off the plane and took the bullet train to the station. I had the directions to take the local metro, but after a 16 hour flight I was beat and just left the station and thought I would take a cab. But the area was deserted and it was raining. There were no cars or people or anything, and my cellphone didn't work. I walked around for like 10 minutes and somehow found a cab. Got in, but the driver spoke no English and my Japanese was very poor. I had the address of my Airbnb, but the address was in English and he couldn't read it. I was able to pull up the Japanese address on my phone (thankfully I had downloaded the map before the trip, because the data connection was dead). So I gave him my phone and he started driving. But my phone kept locking, so he had to give it to me to unlock like every couple minutes. And when we got there, he drove right past it. I tried to tell him to stop, but I didn't know the word, I might have said "This" or "There" or something, but he didn't understand. Eventually he dropped me off close enough. But that was an eye opening experience, the first time I traveled to a non-English speaking country.
