Once I know that early RPGs were influenced by D&D, I start to see the influence of D&D in so many videogames; it's crazy. Heck, I heard that even DOOM and Wolfenstein 3d were both influenced by D&D on some level. I've never placed a game of D&d and perhaps I'd never want to but, it's just amazing how influential that tabletop board games had on videogames; even the non-RPG ones.
However, it seems that most singleplayer RPGs won't even try to imitate the storytelling of any D&D game. The best they could do, is to take influence from choice-your-own-adventure books by giving us dialog trees. Now all of that is nice but, it would be cool if more singleplayer games could experiment with procedural storytelling. Now the obvious reason why we don't see more examples of procedurally storytelling in games, is because it would be difficult to pull off. Personally, I'd like to see an action RPG try it; even if it means the game doesn't get to have voice acting.
Just for fun, could you guys come up with an idea for a system of procedurally generated storytelling in an action game? What about even a fake system of procedurally generated stories for an game? I was feeling nostalgic for The Legend Of Zelda: A Link To The Past. Still, I was imagining a version of the game where the player could choice a back story for Link and that would impact were link's home is at the start of the game, the order in which Link unlock the dungeons in the game, alongside their difficulties. I think it would make the game more interesting, since the game is basically a bunch of levels continued to each other by a web of hub world locations.
If you have any more ideas on how to make storytelling in an action game more interesting( using some sort of mechanic), you could share your ideas with me for fun. Also the more cheap smoke and mirrors tricks, the better (or at least for the developer I assume).
