Technically, the first anime I ever watched was Japanese children's TV, including the original Speed Racer. I'm told I was crazy about it, but I don't remember much from back then. :)

I was really into Sailor Moon in high school. I mean, I guess that is technically anime, but it was kind of cheesy. Speed Racer too and Akira, and Dragon Ball, whatever they played on American TV in the 90's. There was Blockbuster where I would rent VHS tapes, that's how I found out about Ghost in the Shell. But it was a really small section with not a lot of good stuff. Back then there weren't much imports. However, there was this place in midtown NYC that would have bootleg anime VHS tapes and I think the guys there did the English subtitles themselves. That was the only place to get real Japanese series, but I was broke back then and couldn't afford much.

Speed Racer, Astroboy, Battle Of The Planets (really Science Ninja Team Gatchaman) and Star Blazers (really Space Battleship Yamato) were my first ones. (I'm 48)

The live action version of Space Battleship Yamato was actually pretty cool, some good space combat scenes. Firing the Wave Motion Gun in the original and live action:

Aside from kids shows like pokemon and yu gi oh, the first anime I watched H gata B kei. At the time I wasn't very good at English, so I only understood half of it. But it still intrigued me and somehow got me into anime. That was like 10 years ago.

Now I primarily watch slice of lifes and comedies. I enjoy more chill or funny shows like Yuru Camp and Saiki K.

Yeah, me too. But most of the stuff might be inappropriate for the forum, so I won't post recommendations. However, Crunchyroll is very cheap and a great service. They have so much anime and it is good quality.

I'm learning Japanese now, so I can watch anime without the subtitles. I just joined this site, it's like Netflix for learning a new language. They started with Spanish (which is most of the content), but they recently added Japanese and some others. Not a huge selection right now, but it's pretty cool. They show both English and Japanese subtitles, and then quiz you at the end.

I go through phases these days of watching a handful of seasonal anime or reading manga or comics and nowhere near as frequently as I used to. Also far fussier as I used to watch first 2-3 episodes of most shows to get an idea on if I'd want to watch the rest (comes back to that time poor thing again).

Currently reading Invincible (western), and beside from working through classic Ghibli again with the missus I'd say Arkane (also western) was the last thing I watched and rated.

Most genres are fair game to me, but I tire pretty easily of the repetition in a lot of shows now. Shounen in particular has to do something impressive to hold my attention.

My "converting the video library to av1" project is a year old, this month. I wrote a little script to add up the run-time of all my videos, which shows me that I've converted discs totaling:

1223 files: 18 days, 04:43:08s (0.26TB)

Leaving me only this much left to go (based on my old x264 transcodes):

9901 files: 138 days, 10:54:49s (2.5TB)

This is only counting anime -- most of my discs. It's an inefficient process, but it helps keep me occupied and satisfies my obsessive personality traits. :)

P.S. And if you think that's bad, you should see my backup/checksum routine.

Interesting talking to my polar opposite. I keep forgetting to write down the date my dog got his rabie shots. I have no idea where last years taxes are much less 7 years ago. I hate watching any movie twice even if I can barely remember what happened.

What's bad is when you're obsessive and your memory starts to go. Then you find yourself constantly thinking, "Did I do that? Did I do that? Maybe I only did part of it. Where's my list? I can't find my list!"

The great thing about being obsessive and paranoid is that you're perfectly qualified for computer security jobs. Or crazy, mumbling, homeless guy.

I still buy Blu-Ray discs, mostly for the collector's value and cause I want to support the creators more directly. But I rarely open the discs. I have a whole shelf with them all in the plastic wrapper. I just watch on streaming. It's just a lot easier. And I rarely even watch movies all that much, even though I have a 125" home theater projector in my living room. I get more enjoyment out of reading books and talking to people on the internet.

The problems with streaming (at least in non american countries): - Not everything is on there. - Services like Netflix often only get a 2 year license to content. There have been many movies I wanted to see but waited too long and they were dropped. Sometimes they come back (sometimes on a competing service), but not always.

For example, no streaming service in Australia includes Marx Brothers movies. I can rent or buy them from Google, MS, Apple or Youtube, but if I'm going to pay extra per movie I might as well buy a dvd/bluray and have a permanent copy.

Can I watch the classic UK tv series The Professionals? Apple TV (which I'll never subscribe to) has 1 season. But I've already got the 4 season dvd box set. (So I don't need to stream it, just showing how these services have incomplete content)

Anyway, back to anime... :) One that I enjoyed recently was So I'm a Spider, So What? Very odd but fun (at least when the spider is involved). A school girl dies and is reincarnated as a giant monster spider in a fantasy dungeon. She uses her RPG experience to survive.

A lot of japanese I know comes from my childhood obsession with japanese myths. I can't answer how I got so into it, but I did.

I used to be paranoid. If you know the philosophy of how the pendulum swings, you can imagine how bad it used to be based on how little I worry now. Shortly after I got over all the panic, fear and paranoia, I realised how common it is. Having the ability to not worry looks a lot like the habit to not care to a lot of the worry-obsessed. And they make up the majority. I look at it as embracing my lineage. None of it is that pretty. Truckers, loggers, bottom of the blue collar barrel but man do they live a long time and enjoy it. My grandpa put it best saying I "come from a long line of good ass hard-knocks".

I know this is completely off topic, ignore this happened but it throws me on the floor everytime I remember how perfectly Gerard rolls the A sound in "ashes". This dude's vocals are why I keep going back to this band even though I'm well past middle school age.

Another problem I have, with any type of streaming, is dropouts in video quality. There's a scene in Oz the Great and Powerful (just as an example) where the hero approaches a flowering tree and the tree explodes into thousands of butterflies. On cable tv, or any other type of streaming, it usually ends up being a mass of compression artifacts -- on bluray (or properly encoded mkv), it looks good. I suppose it's not a big deal to most people, but I wince every time I see something like that. There's only so much you can do when your bandwidth is limited.

I made a police box from a tutorial once. I was amazed at how pretty it looked when I was done. :)

No, that's pretty good for triangles. There aren't individual leaves, just branches. It would be hard to make one with a lower poly count that still looked semi-realistic.
