This will probably mess me up, but I'm going to try splitting my time between a long term project in 3d and a shorter term project in 2d. What happened is I'm kind of stuck on the modeling end of it right now and it's getting really boring. I don't want to get involved in 2d art either. Just do some simple art puzzle games.

Yeah, I'm still stuck on art. I compromised and bought the art for my demos, but I'm still trying to learn Blender. It's a long process and may take a year before I'm good enough to do a demo with my own art. I mean I did model some small parts of my demos, but I'm not that good yet. So I've just been doing video tutorials here and there on Udemy to learn, and buying art in the meantime so I can produce something now.

Yeah, I'm not a very fast modeler at all. I still plan to find models on sale and what not but also to do some of my own. I still am not sure if I'm going to use the Terrain plugin or import from Blender. It takes a lot of experimenting. Usually when this happens I just shelve one project and do another, but I don't want to do that this time. I plan on doing one day of a puzzle game and one day of my 3d project. I get bored so easily, I need to change things up a lot. When you are in school, you constantly change every hour or couple hours and it actually helps to get more done. I don't do that much in a day on programming or art anyway. It's mostly in the afternoon for a while along with surfing the internet and playing a few games.

I'd probably suggest any beginner just really focus on a handful of hard surface modelling shortcuts (G,R,E,S,I,Ctrl+R) as these alone can get you most of the way there and a lot of the rest of Blender will just confuse to begin with. Once your comfortable with that, spend a few days per modifier just learning what is available, as it really changes how you approach problems right from the start. The array/mirror/curve modifiers I remember being epiphany moments when I started out.

I feel like Blender is just overwhelming because of the sheer quantity of stuff it can do and is presented to you. But after using it for a while, a huge amount of it is so niche you probably won't need it any time soon. As in if your not doing animations, basically all gamedev related modelling can be done in a single tab with these 3 windows: I'm sure power users would slap me, but I mostly work in one tab and add/remove windows as needed. The tabs just add clutter imo and at most I might flick between 2-3 of them.

Some process in base Blender just aren't fast though. This is where community free/paid plugins often help a lot like SimpleBake and MaskTools.

You constantly change every hour or couple hours and it actually helps to get more done.
I take short breaks but I for one can't stand context switching between technical tasks. Spending a morning in ML only to be told your afternoon will be webdev is hugely unproductive for example, I just don't have enough mental RAM to do that effectively and there's a pretty big ramp up/down time as your brain gets into the flow of each.

I would recommend reading the Blender Secrets book. I just started it, it's very long (1,300 pages) but it's hands down the best material you can find.

Complete tangent, but I finally got round to finishing Spirited Away (tried watching a few times in the last couple decades and never got into it) and still consider it hugely overrated.

It's certainly got a scattering of truly beautiful individual scenes but throughout an inconsistent and largely nonsensical story. Don't understand why this is the Ghibli film that gets all the hype as imo:

Arriety is just boring, and the Wind Rises should be renamed "How not to treat your wife" :S

Howl's is awesome, but something about the top 3 all trigger massive nostalgia/childhood memories or something. I didn't watch Howl's until I was 20+ but suspect I saw the others growing up (and then forgot), so the music just does it for me.

And Grave of the Fireflies IS excellent, but my god is it depressing. Only didn't rate higher because I basically never want to see it again lol.

Well I'm weird. I never liked anything from Studio Ghibli. I haven't seen all of them, but the few I saw were incredibly boring and depressing. I don't know. I mean the production quality was good, but I couldn't get down with it. I'm a huge fan of Ghost in the Shell. There has been so much material, it would take like months to watch it all, and all of it is top notch. Ergo Proxy is great. Psycho-Pass, another good one. Those are all cyberpunk. If you want some weirder recommendations, try Elfen Lied, or Higurashi When They Cry. For VR: Accel World, Den-Noh Coil, Log Horizon and Sword Art Online were great. And for cuter ones, Plastic Memories was pretty good.

Yeh the OG GitS film was great but I couldn't get into all the lore/introspection SaCs went into.

Ergo I just got sick of pausing to read stuff so never finished it. Pyscho Pass season 1 was pretty great, not sure why I never watched later seasons.

Elfen Lied is good/dark/weird but the fanservice is unnecessary/out of place considering how almost slapstick gory it is imo. Kara no Kyoukai (this one in particular ) is better in every aspect imo and is tonally consistent with the subject matter.

If you like Elfen Lied and are into predictions of our future technology, Mnemosyne is probably up your alley. The main story I recall being pretty whack and is similarly gory, but seeing the progression/integration of AR/VR into human life throughout time (each episode time skips as main characters are immortal) was fascinating/believable.

Not into the whole VR/other world trope beyond Kono Suba (which mostly satires the genre). I remember watching SAO S1E1 when it first came out and thinking 'wow what a great concept' but I'd already lost interest about 5 episodes in when it became clear it was a going down the generic shounen power fantasy route. Everything I've seen since in that space since has had a similar effect :(

Den-Noh Coil was cool, it was with kids hacking with these AR glasses, but it was very light and not with the cheesy tropes. It sort of reminded me of the Animatrix episode Beyond. I watched it a while ago when it came out, but I couldn't get the subtitles to work so I just watched it in Japanese. I've been learning Japanese for a while, but I'm super beginner, so that was rough, but I understood more than I expected.

Those links look interesting thanks. I've never been one that can concentrate at something very long. If I was younger, I probably would have been diagnosed ADHD and given drugs. I lucked out there. I'll never forget when I got to seventh grade and we switched classes every hour and actually walked to different rooms. I thought I was in heaven. My grades just shot up.

Well, I was referring more to mean people on the internet, or cancel culture, but I guess it can be applied to anything in life. It's just human psychology, not politics.

@cybereality you've definitely heard of Lain, right? I just saw it. It was a lot like Ergo Proxy in theme only a lot less explicitly gnostic in philosophy. I'm not a big anime guy but i do love weird animated sci-fi when it comes with a good helping of weird spirituality.

Yes, I love lain. It's kind of older, so I was trying to stick to more recent stuff. One of the best series of all time. I bought the Blu Ray and watched it last year and it still makes as little sense as it did the first time I saw it. Texhnolyze was also a good one, in a similar vein. In fact, there is no dialogue at all in the first episode, it is very weird.

Just recently some dude heard i liked Ergo Proxy and made me watch the entirety of lain and said i have to see texhnolyze. I guess I'll watch it then. Eventually.

Well, I don't do serious anime anymore, just comedies. Life is serious enough. :)

My all-time favorite is Gamers!. It's just a silly little romantic comedy about geeks falling in love for the first time and getting everything wrong. It's also one of the few series I actually binge watch, because once I start, I just can't stop.

Of course, the first anime I ever watched (as an adult) was Ah! My Goddess, and they say that your first time sets the tone for everything that follows.
