Screenshot location for online Godot games ?

Hello everybody :)

Some time ago, I started working on Hop!2D, my precision platformer project (you can try it and send me feedback, having a look at it in the PROJECTS section of the forum), and I included a screenshot function in the game (each one is created by pressing the F12 key).

No problem to get the corresponding images from downloadable versions (screenshots are created in the directory of the game) but I was wondering : are these screenshots also saved if I use this function through an online version of my game, for example the one hosted by itch.io ? And, in that case, where can I find them on my disk ? I suppose it depends on the OS used ?

If you save screenshots to user://, they will be saved in the browser's IndexedDB storage (scoped to the domain name). Web browsers generally don't provide a convenient built-in way to browse the IndexedDB contents, but developer tools or add-ons may be able to do this.

Saving to IndexedDB might not be the best idea for screenshots (particularly if they are uncompressed PNGs). For example, on Firefox mobile, I think the entire storage from 1 domain is 5MB and for desktop it is 50MB, On Chrome desktop I think it's 250MB. But PNGs can be large, a 4K image uncompressed is about 12MB (larger than the entire store on mobile and a quarter of the storage on desktop, meaning 4 images would max out the space). Users can set it to unlimited in advanced browser options, but most people won't know about this.

You might be able to access the image stored in the IndexedDB storage using the Javascript singleton in Godot and executing some code to get the image from the database, and then download it or open a popup or something so the user can download it. That said though, I couldn't find any examples of how to get an image from IndexedDB and download it. I found this blog post which gets the image from IndexedDB, but it doesn't show how to download it.

You're better off saving it with Javascript. You can encode an image in Godot as Base64 and send it to a Javascript function that will be able to open a native file dialog.
