Yeah, Houdini may be there. Don't have any hands on experience but from what I've seen it looks quite powerful. Not sure if it's as general purpose as Maya though.
I always wanted to use XSI since it had a non-destructive workflow, but I never got around to it (and I guess it's dead now, friggin' Autodesk).
