I think certain games wouldn't work as well with pathfinding, like open world games where it would be too hard to bake a certain area. Or like race car games where you want the cars to generally follow a path, but use AI to veer off. I know some games still use waypoints for this type of purpose. That was kind of the old system, you used way points for a general direction and then use phyics collisions to make choices if the path is blocked or there was an enemy near by. We were just experimenting with a system like that in context based steering. I plan on using it for some games. An example is a guard walking back and forth and then reacting to a player coming near and attacking. Two waypoints and a little follow code. Plus it's just interesting. I have no idea what the navigation system is doing.

For Wipeout on PSP, they actually coded the AI to use a virtual controller just like the player. So the player and AI vehicles used the same code. The AI would just do ray casts and collision detection and then press the left or right direction on the analog stick like a human player. Not sure if any other games tried this.

Fun little trick: in an A* pathfinding system if you make the heuristic value random (instead of something like manhattan distance), a valid path will still be found (if one is possible) but it will wander around a bit, like a drunk person trying to go somewhere. It won't cross over itself, it will just be inefficiently meandering. :)

That's a good way to code, maybe not to that extreme, but the player and AI are both a kinematic body getting state instructions.

That's another one I like because it was the simpler pathfinding algo. I've written it before from tutorials. Kind of cool.

Now that I've seen the footage of how that game operates, it does make sense that the AI would be coded like that. Even though I'm working on a first person shooter, the AI that you've described sounds extremely close to what I'm working on for my game. What my enemy ai does it that it will move forward, while repeatedly sweeping/scanning what's in front of it with it's raycast. If anything collides with the raycast, the sweep will stop and the enemy will "move away" from what the raycast is colliding with(which is why the sweeping has to stop). Of course, the enemy isn't actually "moving away" from anything. Instead, they're conditional statements that check the rotation degrees of the raycast on the Y axis, then determine where the enemy must move and rotate, while the enemy is moving forward; it's insanely simple. Doom was a lot more advanced than I thought it was. I remembered they used state-machines. Funny we are still doing much of the same thing. Also, I find that dumb AI isn't necessarily a bad thing because it gets involved in strategy. If something does the same thing in every situation, that makes strategy for an overall solution. It also reminds me why I prefer turn based games after watching that video.

While ShareX is good for recording desktop applications, it's not the best option for recording games for performance reasons. OBS, NVIDIA ShadowPlay or AMD ReLive will perform better (the latter two use fast GPU-based encoding methods).

I've been playing old tycoon games a lot with an old computer I got recently. I love the drunken stupor pathfinding tactic a lot from back then. It's frustrating but it makes me laugh watching a turtle do several circles around a tree before deciding it wants to do something about its 100% hunger value.

Inform 7 now has a free software license. So, if you haven't tried it yet, you have another excuse.

I've played 5.5 hours in Solasta now, which I consider it to be not a waste of money at this point, since the game was 15 dollars. I've gotten killed twice already and had to restart at an earlier save. I think I'm on easy too. I'm getting the hang of it more, though. The battles are quite interesting and there is enough of a story for me.

I'm playing Cyberpunk 2077 again, this time on PS5. I already beat the game twice on PC, but I haven't played it in like a year, so it feels new. The graphics on PS5 are sick too, it looks better than my $4,000 computer.

Ive beaten it and working thru the the dlc. Cons: camera controls, voice acting, and this big that can suddenly alter you charcter's gender- dnt mess with my my character. As the game progresses Women can get getting beards, men geting boobs etc. I dont want my characters changed as a joke, bug, what not its not cool to change someone's character as that is the persns avatar in the game. IN my first playthru my sorcerous grew a full on beard.

Otherwise I lke the game play and the spells and arts.

Oh one other bug you ca can suddenly wihout warnng become godmode

Im awake about 4 to 10 hours a day in about 2 hour stretches and I so wsh I cpuld fimd and aweseome AAA crpg I havent played. I finished Path of the wrighteous and loved it but all the dlcs have gotten bad reviews 1.2 tp 3.9 stars out of 5 and they only offer 8 hrs of game play.

If I could stay awake more than 2 hour straiht Id try can code more. Ou have no idea boring cancer is.

BTW Paradox has a World of Darkness game jam or licencing thing for itch io if your interested making a Vampire / world of darkness game, art, IF etc

Good to hear from you jb. I think I saw they just did an update so hopefully some of those bugs will be gone on my playthru. I guess I was prepared for the worst on the voice acting because it doesn't seem that bad to me. I had heard it was terrible.

I notice that I haven't new game in a while. I mean I was playing Dread Templar but, even though I like the old school shooting, I don't feel like the game was respecting my time as an adult who can't afford to play videogames all day anymore. I like playing Perfect Dark on emulator; the way it's structure is nice to both hardcore players and "casuals" a like. Still, I wish Perfect Dark had more replay value. I've played the original Deux Ex and Deux Ex: Human Revolution. I've heard people complain about how there isn't enough "innovation" in the gaming industry but, it seems that they're always going to trends that dominate the industry. Even though I wasn't a fan of DXHR's story, I really liked the gameplay and wished it was the standard that all "generic" shooters would follow. It would also be cool if there were more shooters like Perfect Dark. It seems like the closest thing we have to Perfect Dark these days are the Call Of Duty games. Even though I'm not a fan of COD, I do appreciate that it's one of the few FPS franchises that manage to have provide both a single player experience along side a multiplayer experience; this seems to be one of it's main similarity to Perfect Dark. Another thing that both COD and Perfect Dark have it common is that they also have bot matches for their multiplayer; I miss bot matches. Still, I prefer the Perfect Dark single player in comparison to what COD has to offer.

I'll have to stick with branches on that. I know I have heard of it and seen examples, but not my thing. I have enough trouble getting my logic to work.
