So yes. If the spaceship is travelling at the same speed as gravity up, with no gravity in the room, then to objects inside it would be the same as on earth. However, most physics engines are tuned to handle rigid body against static body collisions well, because most games the ground is a static body. So I think the physics engine might bug out without some careful tuning if you were trying to simulate those kind of forces with 2 moving objects.

That said, if your character is inside the ship, you can fake it. In Godot there is a gravity space override (you can create an area node and inside it has a special gravity). So you can have the ship not even moving at all (maybe some asteroids in the background moving so it looks like it's moving) and then inside the ship you override the gravity of the area to be 9.8 m/s or whatever you want. Then the ship could be a static body and I think everything would work like normal.

Right, I'm not actually planning on moving the ship. I plan on setting the game gravity to zero so objects outside an Area node can just float away. This way if I make a garbage chute objects can just float outside. I just want to make changes to the gravity override inside my spatial area node. In my brain it makes sense now, after the ship accelerates to 9.8m/s and holds at that speed there won't seem to be any gravity inside anymore. But I take what @xyz to mean that if the ship is built with the factory on it's side, one could use a planet's gravity while orbiting it, which is genius. I don't think this would work if I picked up materials on Venus and wanted to fabricate on the way to Earth tho, unless I was accelerating the entire time.

Right, gravity is an acceleration. If it is moving at a constant speed, then there is no force, like being on an airplane. I get what you are saying now.

I consider this because I want the player to be able to affect gravity. One idea was that the player could reduce thrust, reduce gravity, and therefore get more power to use in the factory (but my ideas about thrust & gravity were wrong). Another idea is letting the player ping-pong objects around in a zero-g factory environment.

Edit: I guess I could just let the player keep the ship accelerating, what's the harm in that? Hahaha. I'll just have to animate some stars moving outside to correlate with the crazy speeds. Actually, if you're going from planet to planet, you just accelerate half way and de-accelerate halfway, right? So all you do is flip the ship around half way and then you've got gravity both ways! So the "standing up" floor plan still works lolol.

They wouldn't just jump up a bit, they would have inherited the inertia from the body pushing against them, so they would continue upwards at 9.8m/s until they hit another body. While the floor underneath them would also be moving along in that direction but at 8.8m/s. So a difference of 1m/s, indeed.

You should check out The Expanse. They handle this pretty well. First you fire the engine to accelerate then you turn the ship around and fire the engine again to decelerate about half way through the voyage. Only a few points where there is no emulated gravity from the acceleration.

@DaveTheCoder Have you already taken the cat to the vet? I think that if a cat does not groom itself he has a tricky problem

I don't have any excuse for not knowing all this. Not only have I watched all the expanse but I also have played almost 400 hours of space engineers. I've even learned enough math to fail a masters level math course. With my understanding of gravity, I fail up.

I started removing the mats myself with a scissors and de-matting brush. If he doesn't exhibit any other problems, I'll ask about it at his next regular vet visit in a couple of months.

I've read that it's normal for older cats to stop grooming themselves, possibly due to arthritis.

You could just proclaim that in year 2090 the gravX technology was invented. It's so powerful and versatile that it lets player exert all the neat gravity gimmicks you can think of, by a mere push of a button or two. Maybe an accident happened with factory's main gravX reactor causing all sorts of gravity anomalies to leak out. Regardless, the factory can still travel around, say circulating among the moons of Jupiter. These places are in dire need of some fresh fruit.

Second tangent, if you're ever in an argument with a flat-earther who thinks the only reason we're stuck to the ground is because a flat earth is constantly accelerating 'up' through space at 9.8m/s, tell them if that were true we would've exceeded the speed of light in ~354 days.

Yet ironically, Einstein used that exact starting premise to conclude and mathematically formalize gravity's warping effect on the space-time continuum.

The basic premise is that the universe itself is mathematics. I came to this conclusion before reading the book, but the author backs it up with science. Basically think of it this way, there are things that are true that can be true without an intelligent observer. For example, a simple mathematical concept like 1 + 1 = 2. This is true, will always be true, and also must always have been true. But if the universe or space/time had a beginning, how or where could have a mathematical truth like 1 + 1 = 2 existed? The only thing that makes sense is that mathematics came first, was infinite (in both directions of time), and in fact physical matter itself is a manifestation of math. Not the other way around. He explains it well in the book, worth reading.

Ok so now I’m thinking I’ll design another moveable factory piece that while on creates a gravitational field. This way I don’t have to worry about simulating the ship moving and whatever. For any game object I have the choice to implement these buttons: switch gear, speed up, speed down, and rotate. Switch gear will change modes: pull everything downwards mode and pull everything toward the device mode. (Won’t that be fun). Speed up and down will affect power usage and the gravity vector length. Rotate I guess will just rotate the model. Awesome! Gotta do the Mach 5 cannon first tho I know I know. And graduate.
