I agree with the gist of what is being said, that it’s important not to shut down conversation and to tell people why you are moderating so they know what is going on. I strive for making sure that, if I moderate something, those affected know why the action was taken so they can adjust. While some people are bad actors, most people are responsive to the feedback, make adjustments, and become active members of the community without any further issues.
Likewise, I try to keep personal opinions and biases out of any moderation I do. It’s difficult at times, and I make mistakes, but I actively try to keep myself as objective as possible because I believe that is best for the community.
HOWEVER, I think it’s important not to go too far on the other extreme. Rules exist for a reason because we don’t want others to be harmed.
Certain topics do cause harm to others, and it’s important that while you may have freedom of speech in some parts of the world (not everywhere though, unfortunately), that does not give you the privilege to hurt others with your words, even if it’s in the name of free speech. Likewise, misdirecting or intentionally misinforming others is harming, if not as directly, in my opinion.
It is also important to remember that we only see the world through our own lens, we cannot walk life in another’s shoes. Just because it may not bother you, that doesn’t mean it does not cause great distress to another and that most be kept in consideration as well.
Moderating, censorship, and free speech is a complicated issue. I believe it is one that requires constant attention, constant reflection, and should be taken seriously. It is a not a light responsibility. I believe some form of moderation/censorship is required to ensure communities are not destroyed by bad actors, as otherwise it is very hard to protect others who otherwise would be ignored or hurt.
Regardless, I think the most important thing is to stay open minded and empathetic. We are all people, we all make mistakes, and we are all trying our best. This is a very complicated topic with many factors and considerations. I do not believe there is necessarily a single right answer. It is very much a living, dynamic thing that has to evolve and change to meet the needs of the time and the people involved.
Regardless, I think this topic of speech/censorship/moderation is getting a bit too off topic and not really suited for the forums. Ultimately society, moderation, censorship, and similar topics are something everyone has opinions on and I think it’s best we try and stay away from such heavily personal/opinion-focused topics. It is a topic that is bigger than any individual here or the forums itself.
