Thanks I didn't even know substance was a thing. I have the 20 buck adobe subscription, I wonder how long it will let me "try" substance for. Not sure I even care, I'm just going to down a redbull and export as many free materials through it as I can. BWAHhhahahaha.
Substance is somewhat affordable on Steam and is a life-time license (not subscription). It goes on sale sometimes but maybe not now that it's an Adobe product. https://store.steampowered.com/app/1454910/Substance_3D_Designer_2021/

Wait, Substance wasn't always owned by Adobe?!
They were bought in 2019. https://techcrunch.com/2019/01/23/adobe-acquires-allegorithmic-makers-of-the-substance-texture-tools
Adobe had been invested in Algorithmic and part of the advisory board for a long while, but no, they didn't always own Algorithmic.
edit: might be relevant to note that Algorithmic started out as Photoshop plugins developer.

Was too curious, had to look. In their description on steam:
You will get free updates on Steam up to the end of 2021

Yes, you don't get updates forever (since they will launch a 2022 version of course, which you have to pay for) but the existing version doesn't stop working.
I feel this was getting too off-topic so I've split the topic.
