I think the current issue is that people are willing to pay for awful AAA games that have no new mechanics and then rant about them on reddit. If people would just stop paying for bad quality games, the big companies would be forced to try new things. But since they only care about money, and this is getting them tons of cash in a safe way, they wont bother. I personally think their are tons of great games tho, made by people who are making the games they want to play, but a lot of them are drowned in the noise.
I love how your name is OpinionatedGame and you wrote this.
AAA games have big budgets and are big risks. Their main instinct is to follow the safe path and if you were spending the money you'd probably do the same.
It's the job of small indie devs to lead the way in game development. We're here to prove that a novel game concept can succeed so then the big producers can throw their own cash behind it. Well.. you can either follow that path or just make something really niche and cash in on the fact most devs won't go to a certain corner of development because it just won't ever be mainstream enough.
Remember all the first video games were basically small indie experiments we could put together now in a week or two. I'd argue the earlier successes and failures did more to shape the game market today than just greed. But I'm only 31 so idk.
Hey Erich, those are some good points. Yeah, I didn't mean to come across as a "all AAA games are bad and evil" guy, because there are a lot of AAA games that are fun. my intention was to respond to a comment that was saying the game industry kinda sucked now, basically saying, "Yeah, there are a lot of bad games, but let's not throw out the baby with the bathwater." Also I was thinking of the Madden franchise. The games are fun, but people need to stop buying the new ones until EA actually adds stuff to them. And to be fair to the AAA industry, they have shareholders and are thus legally obligated to make the decisions that will make the most money.
and yeah, I think that good games are still shaping the market in a good way, and I don't think it's all run by greed. A lot of people still make games to be the best they can, even in the AAA industry.
So sort of a retraction/explanation there. =)
And my name does fit with that comment, lol
