I want to make an opensource game using godot. How would I protect the rights to the graphics and game, while making it opensource.

Separate license for the code and the artwork. You can also look into dual licensing but don't expect to get many contributors to your project in that case.

I don't think I'll get any contributors. But I'll still look into separate license. How is it possible to protect opensource in the event someone tries to make a claim on it? Unless it was registered with the copyright office I don't know how. But because of the cost of registering with the copyright office I want to avoid this. I think it's over $1000.00 USD.

Unless your project has a huge following/is popular and well known I doubt that is likely to be an issue you face. Rather by the time your project has grown to such a scale there will be enough years worth of commits as proof that you and/or your community were the genuine authors of the work. Copyright protection is automatic. Registered copyright is nice(it certainly does have benefits) and all but not strictly a necessity.
