First off, a little about me. I'm an old timer, having first been introduce to game programming back when BBS games were a thing. I've been coding on and off for Diku/Smaug Multi-User Dungeons for 20 years and I'm looking to reinvent one of my favorite codebases (Circlemud) in a graphical UI. My goal is to do the following:
- Introduce the system in the style of Final Fantasy 3 for SNES.
- Implement turn based combat and multiplayer functionality.
- Create a dedicated server and Client.
- Implement a Dedicated Server P2P system to allow others who wish to link their worlds together can.
- Implement an Online Creation tool for those with administrative rights to use to build in the game world.
In truth, the idea is to take what Circle had to offer and re-imagine it graphically. In regards to Muds, most were hosted by enthusiasts, the code was open source, the game was freely distributed, and it offered a place for people to play that didn't have to fork out a few paychecks for a high end gaming system. The closest thing i've seen to a privately hosted Persistent World since Muds was Neverwinter Nights which we built quite a world in back in the day, but I think it's high time to bring the core ideals back and give the power to create and build back to the players. Corporate control has been lack luster in gaming the last ten or so years usually resulting in unwanted changes to strengthen the bottom line, it would be nice if it was about the entertainment and vision again.
If this is possible, I would be very interested in what development track you would suggest in following from the start to the finish. Been dreaming about a project like this for years, hoping this engine could be my ticket to developing something I could really dig my teeth into.
