The GDScript basics page's History section explains this in the documentation. In short, GDScript was created to overcome shortcomings typically found in Python when using it for game development. Also, creating a new language from scratch proved to be easier than integrating a language implementation as large as CPython.

At first I was concerned about Godot's use of a custom language. I looked at the engine maybe a year or so ago and that was one of the big reasons I didn't explore further. But after using it for about a week I feel like GDScript was a good choice. It is very simple and does everything that is needed. I've been programming for a while now, so it only took like 2 days to learn the syntax, the rest is just understanding the Godot API. I also like that the script editor is integrated into the main editor itself. And switching tabs is super fast, it is really nice compared to having to separate IDEs open and having to switch between them.

If you look at the doc page, you will see that it is easy to pick up (compared to C++, for example) and you can even make a game probably with just the basics of the language. I admit, I haven't worked with Python that much, did mess around with it a bit for work years ago but haven't needed it for anything so I don't know all that much. I was just pointing out that GDScript is a customized language that works well for game development, without extra unnecessary complexity. I was commenting on using an external IDE, which is not great for code completion or debugging. Also, with other engines I've used, it's uncomfortable to constantly switch back and forth between programs, it is much better integrated into the engine. 'switching tabs' - what tabs you talking about? gif? I mean the tabs on the top of Godot (2D, 3D, Script). It is very self contained and easy to use.
